Travels with Wildcat

Log : April 3, 2006

We left Pompano Beach April 1st (no fooling) and had a fine crossing over to Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands. We had easterly winds the entire time but they were manageable. All through the night we watched cruise ships coming and going. Most of the boats sailing have a specific set of lights so that you can identify what kind of ship is approaching you. The great thing about the cruise ships is that they have every possible light on! You are never in doubt as to the type of ship. Once we veered off towards Great Harbour we enjoyed a very calm run to the marina. With the sea so calm, we could see the bottom even though we were in 60+ foot of water. It's so hard to believe it's that deep. It reminds us quickly of why we love the Bahamas so much.

Great Harbour marina is very well protected and can accomodate boats over 100' and they even let us in. We got in around noon and went through immigration quickly. It wasn't until 4pm that we were able to see the customs officer, so we decided to spend the night in the marina. We're the lone sailboat amongst the mega and not-so-mega powerboats. It's a friendly place and there is a beautiful beach a short walk away. We'll sail south tomorrow making our way over to the Exumas. It is so nice to be sailing again.

Fair winds and following seas. Keep in touch through our winlink email address.
