Title: Enhancing Understanding of Discrete Event Simulation Models through Analysis

Speaker: Kara Olsen

Advisor: Dr. Michael Overstreet

Abstract:
Simulation is used increasingly throughout research and development for many purposes. While model output is often the primary interest, insights gained through the simulation process can also be valuable. Insights can come from building and validating the model as well as analyzing its behaviors and output; however, much that could be informative may not be easily discernible through these existing traditional approaches, particularly as models become more complex.

This research suggests several possibilities of how to obtain such additional insights. These analyses have other obvious uses including aid in debugging, verification and documentation. This work, however, is primarily focused on how these analysis techniques can be used to help modelers gain additional insights into the models they are using or constructing.

I propose developing a collection of analysis tools to provide simulation modelers with additional information about the models they are using. The focus is to extend the types of information available through existing approaches. A key component is a compiler for a C-like language in which modelers specify (code) their models. Both static and dynamic analysis techniques will be used; the compiler is necessary to support dynamic analysis. With the ability to directly monitor and record interactions, additional information could be presented to the modeler in order to facilitate new insights.
