All ODU Team takes 'Best in Show' at Dominion Enterprises Hack-a-thon #6
Dominion Enterprises is a Fortune 500 media conglomerate located in downtown Norfolk. It is parent to many popular platforms including homes.com and forrent.com. DE's 6th Hack-a-thon transpired last week on October 3-4th.
The event gave participants 36 hours and 6 APIs drawn at random - to build prototype concepts for the company. Over 9 teams of 6, composing of Dominion Enterprise employees, community developers , and ODU students competed for the prize pools. Categories included Most Market-Ready, Most Innovative, Best Integration of APIs and Best in Show.
An all ODU team took home top honors for Best in Show with their app Instacycle. The students utilized Instagram, Gumby, and DE's Nebulous API to build an app that utilized Instagram pictures as a browsing experience counter to stock model photos used by dealers. They leveraged Instagrams unique tagging API and their social media optimized tags to create a new browsing experience for motorcycle enthusiasts.
Judges were surely very impressed, and they stated that the Instacycle was a lead contender for all four categories. The Old Dominion students and alumnus were proud to win and are excited to compete in Spring for Dominion Enterprise's 2nd Student University Hack-a-thon.
Winners each took home new Nexus 7 tablets, $50 gift cards and an awesome trophy, now displays at the CS Department.
