1) When did you join the Computer Science department at ODU?
I joined in January 2002. Before my position here, I worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1999 to 2002, and the Free University of Brussels from 1994 to 1999.
2) What are your main research interests?
My research focuses on the intersection between information technology, human factors and data mining. I am specifically interested in the analysis of download patterns from Digital Libraries to determine document impact rankings and study the characteristics of user communities.
3) What's you favorite part of being at ODU?
It's a growing, dynamic institution that is making a name for itself in quite a number of areas. The computer science department is a lively place where many research interests are all well represented. The international characteristic of our student body adds a nice flavor to the whole mix.
4) What's your favorite spot in Norfolk?
I can list a number of spots, all of which could be a favorite. The downtown/waterfront area is great because it has a lot of restaurants and cafes. The area around Colley and twenty-first street is great, not to forget the place where I live: Colonial Place. It's right by the water, has many tree-lined streets, beautiful colonial-style houses.
5) What are your future plans for the CS department?
I've been working with the Digital Libraries group to create a cluster of courses associated with information systems, Digital Libraries, web analysis, information retrieval. We want to offer students a full package of courses aimed at the science of information systems. I'd like to introduce more Human Computer Interaction and Cognitive science work to this effort.
