Professor Kurt Maly joined ODU as chair of the Computer Science Department in 1985. During his 22-year tenure and leadership he transformed the department with his vision and dedication. It is due to his efforts that the department has been ranked within the top 100 category for total R&D expenditure (source: NSF). During his tenure the department budget increased five times ($1M to $5M) and the research budget increased 25-times ($80K to $2M). Professor Maly established a PhD program in the department and it now has around 25 PhD students. The number of research publications per year increased from 17 to 92. Besides his administrative duties, he has been an active researcher throughout his career at ODU. During his tenure at ODU, he published over 225 papers and obtained over $10M in research funding. His research has been supported by NASA, NSF, ARPA, Los Alamos, AFRL, NRL, JTASC, SANDIA, and IBM Corporation. While he has stepped down as Department Chair, Professor Maly will remain at ODU in a research and teaching capacity.
The Department has commemorated his service as Chair of the Computer Science Department with an oil portrait hung in the conference room on the third floor of the Engineering and Computational Sciences Building. He has been honored at a recent faculty gathering where he was presented with a plaque and a copy of the portrait.
