Nottoway Tribe

After hundreds of years of gradual assimilation into a larger American culture, the local Virginia Indian tribe is seeking to revive their native language for the benefit of current and future generations.

Presentation 1: Project Description

This presentation's goal was to introduce our project to the class. We began by detailing the nature of who the Nottoway Indians were. After giving a basic history of the Nottoway, we moved onto why there should be an attempt to revive the Nottoway language. From there we delved into the current process for how other groups have restored dead languages. Then we discussed what problems we thought might be encountered and what could be part of the best solution. Finally we talked about who is currently trying to revive the Nottoway language and other similar projects.

The presenters for each slides are as follows:

  • Slides 1-3 by Josh Fetherolf
  • Slides 4-6 by George Calhoun
  • Slides 7-9 by Robert Matson
  • Slides 10-12 by Terry Stilwell
  • Slides 13-15 by Ben Cortina
  • Slides 16-17 by Tatiana Livingston
