Basic Academic Advising Information

Basic information that all Computer Science students should know:

“Students are held individually responsible for the information contained in the University Catalog. Failure to read and comply with University regulations will not exempt students from whatever penalties they may incur.” Old Dominion University Catalog (04/06) page 11
“Advisors will make every effort to give effective guidance to students in academic matters, but the final responsibility for meeting all academic requirements for a selected program rests with the student.” Old Dominion University Catalog (04/06) page 43
Old Dominion university catalogs are free and available to students at Webb Center, the Registrar’s Office (116 Rollins Hall), and can be viewed online at http://www.odu.edu.
I am responsible for regularly checking the Undergraduate Advising Web (http://www.cs.odu.edu/advise_info_ug.shtml) for current information.
Each semester I am responsible for obtaining the Old Dominion University Guide to Enrollment, so that I am aware of the important information and policy changes from the University Registrar.
I am responsible for completing Lower Division University General Education Requirements, upper Division University General Education Requirements, and the requirements for the Major in Computer Science as described in the Old Dominion University Catalog.
I have received a copy of the Requirements for a B.S. Degree in Computer Science Curriculum Sheet.
The Requirements for a B.S. Degree in Computer Science Curriculum Sheet has been explained to me, and I have been given the opportunity to ask questions concerning my degree requirements.
Individual academic advising is available by appointment and or on a walk-in basis during designated hours. Hours and procedures are posted on Advising Information Page (http://www.cs.odu.edu/advise_info_ug.shtml). Times are limited and I have been warned not to wait until the last minute to conduct my business. Lack of preparation on my part does not constitute an emergency for my academic advisor.
Advising is also available by email – brunelle@cs.odu.edu or advisor@cs.odu.edu. In order to be advised by email, students must provide name, student ID, and intended courses in email.
University requirements for graduation include a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 overall and in the major, 120 credit hours, a C or better in all CS courses, passing of the Exit Examination of Writing Proficiency, completion of the Computer Science Exit Exam, and the Senior Assessment. Additional hours may be required to meet the foreign language requirement.
There will be an advisor block on my account every semester.
My academic advisor can only remove an Advisor Block and has no control over any other block.
I am responsible for obtaining the information regarding University graduation requirements and procedures, which is printed each semester in the Guide to Enrollment and the University Catalog.
