The Computer Science Department at Old Dominion offers opportunities to students to receive challenge credit for a course when similar course work has been completed at another institution or the student has significant experience in the topic. Challenge credit will be displayed as part of an educational transcript.
To challenge a course in the computer science curriculum the student should fill out the "Request to take Exam" form available from the Experiential Learning Office, Room 138, GORNTO Teletechnet Building. Experiential Learning will notify the department that the student has applied for a Challenge Examination. The ODU Finance Office for payment of the required challenge fee (see below) will bill the student. Forms and additional information can be found at

At the discretion of the instructor the challenge may include any or all of the following: written or oral examinations, a project or a series of projects, or a set of required assignments. It is the student's responsibility to make an appointment with the examining instructor to schedule the examination and/or to pick up any examination material. The appropriate Exam Fee shall be assessed per credit hour.
If the course challenge is to include more than a strict exam then an additional
Supplemental Portfolio Fee will be charged.
Once the exam is completed, the instructor will provide to the departmental representative, the office of Experiential Learning and to the student the results of their examination.
