Food waste is a major problem in American homes due to limited knowledge of current inventory impacting budgets and schedules.

Problem Characteristics

  • are unaware of the cost of a meal, or the time it takes to make.

Solution

Provide an inventory system that manages food items based upon trends which allow users to save time and money, while reducing waste.

Solution Characteristics
  • A smartphone based application.
  • Maintain a customizable food inventory.
  • Manage a set of family preferences.
  • Recommend meals with prioritization to their current inventory, budget, and/or preferences.
  • Analyze food usage history for trends.
  • Manage a database of meals, which include information on difficulty, equipment needed, and preparation time.
  • Manage a database of ingredient expiration dates.
  • Generate expiration dates for prepared meals.
  • Notify the user of imminent expiration dates of all inventory items.
  • Allow users to broadcast sharable leftovers to other users.
Goals and Objectives
  • Minimize food waste in a household.
  • Maximize utilization of existing pantry products.
  • Allow common menu choices to be prioritized based on historical data.
