What is LoQui?

LoQui is an application designed to improve social and communication skills for autistic children for use through a tablet or smart phone. LoQui interacts with your child as their friend so they learn more about how to behave in social situations.

Autism is a broad range of conditions that affect one's social skills, speech, and non-verbal communication. While interactive methods have proven effective for improving these conditions, there is no comprehensive tool for helping autistic children improve their abilities in these areas.

LoQui will perform like a game that features an Avatar designed to interact with children who perform in the 3 to 11 year old age group.

Avatar

The Avatar will help the child improve social and communications tools using interactive sequences.

Emotion Recognition

LoQui will support the child’s development using exercises for maintaining eye contact, facial expression recognition, verbal expressions/responses, and behavioral conditioning.

Meet the individuals behind the project

Richard Atwell

Project Lead/Mobile Developer

Richard is a senior at Old Dominion University majoring in Computer Science. He previously studied at Northern Virginia Community College where he obtained an Associate of Science Degree in Computer Science and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Richard currently lives in the Washington D.C. area and enjoys spending time with family, sports, and learning about new technologies. After graduation, Richard plans to pursue a career in Software Development.

Chris Guilfoy

Database/Back End Developer

Chris Guilfoy is a senior at Old Dominion University studying Computer Science. In his free time he enjoys fishing, watching sports, and playing computer games. He hopes to start a career as a Java Developer after he graduates.

Ashia James

UI/UX Developer

Ashia is a Senior studying Computer Science at Old Dominion University. When she's not doing school work, you can catch Ashia spending a majority of her time learning about the wonderful world of JavaScript through online tutorials and free coding webisies. Ashia enjoys baking cookies and cakes and loves watching the Food Network. After graduating, Ashia plans to pursue a career as a Front End Developer.

Tyler Aker

Mobile Developer

Tyler Aker is a senior Computer Science major at Old Dominion University. He currently works full time as an IT Systems Administrator and in his free time likes to mountain bike, kayak and hike. After graduation, Tyler plans to switch career paths and begin working in Dev Ops or as a Software Developer.

Josh Farr

Mobile Developer/Tester

Josh Farr is an undergraduate senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, with a minor in Cybersecurity. Currently, he's also employed as Old Dominion University ITS Help Desk. Josh got his first taste of programming when he took a Computer Science course in his senior year of high school, where he first learned Java. In his spare time, he prefers playing videogames and hopes to make videogames as a hobby while working as a Software Engineer.

Hannah Holloway

UI/UX Developer

Hannah Holloway is an undergraduate senior majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Women's Studies. She is specialized in end-user technology and experienced in client support in an enterperise and higher education environment upon working hourly as an ITS Technical Support Professional for ODU. In addition to writing code, she also enjoys crafting and spending time with her cat. She plans to pursue a career in Web or Mobile application development.

Zach Ross

Back-End Developer

Zachary Ross is an undergraduate majoring in Computer Science, aiming for his Bachelor's degree in 2020. He's been going to college since 2014 and earned his Associate's degree in 2017. He briefly had work as a software development intern at MERC for three summers. In his spare time, he mostly does unproductive things, such as watching anime, but when the mood strikes him, he'll work on random personal coding projects or work on his website.
