I interviewed the golf course
superintendant, Kevin Bennington, for several of the city golf courses in Virginia Beach. He use to be the superintendant for the golf course at Kings Mill. Anyway, I have some interesting news. * There are several computer based sprinkler systems out on the market. Toro, rain bird, and hunter. Lets research these and see what we come up with. We need to make it better than these products. * There are systems out there that measure groud water. They aren't wide spread on the golf courses because they said it is safer to use two walkie talkies to get the job done. We knew this already. This may mean that we need to take the testing of water sensors to include a more elaborate system. For example we can take the sensor readings. Then in the database we can house whether or not the sensor is a reading a zone that is located on a hill, in this case the sensor will have to detect a larger amount of water than say for a flat area before it triggers a request to water. * There are certain times a sprinkler can water, say for example nights so this will have to be stored in our database. * The average cost of say a 280 acre golf course sprinkler system, that isn't as elaborate as ours, with only 120 acres of usable or golfing land is $800,000.00 to a million dollars. Keep in mind the rest of the land is woods or water. * He has a problem with the underground fertilizer systems because they stay in the lines. They are impossible to clean out. Therefore hard to calibrate. This is why golf courses aren't using this type of system. We can leave this as an option for the system the user doesn't have to implement it. * He has a real problem with the weed control idea. He says that this is tightly controlled by laws. You can only spread so much weed control and pesticides in a given area. This would be impossible to control. * He says that the average zone which are usually broken down into a green is 4 to 6 depending on size. They have a 100% overlap occuring. We need to keep this in mind Kevin when we are pricing. * He said that technology really scares guys that keep track of the lawns. Not real technically inclined. |
