Q.
So what is disk mirroring, and what does it have to do with backing up?

A.
Disk mirroring replaces all writes to a single logical device to multiple devices with distributing read operations. This produces redundancy of data in the event of failure.

This is colsely related to online backup systems since multiple copies of data are stored on diferent devices.

Q.
Why is there a need for doing this over the network, wouldn't this be easier localy?

A.
Yes, this can be much easly done on a local machine. There already exist several different disk mirroring packages which are local disk mirroring sustems. One product called Online:DiskSuite is developed and supported by Sun Microsystems, Inc. The problem with local disk mirroring is inability of self recovery after major hardware failure, CPU failure for example. Self recovery is posible if mirrored disks are attached to different CPU's. The same holds true if this system is used as a backup system.
