Well the material is the same, the tests are the same, the lab is the same, and the grade and credit counts the same. So in many important ways (like getting credit on your transcript, they ARE the same). However, the Web version is designed to be studied on your own and therefore contains additional support for tracking your progress. It is meant to act more like a personal tutor rather than an impersonal lecture or textbook presentation. During this first offering of the course, we will be experimenting in ways to accomplish this personalized delivery of information. WE have incorporated much of the materiel in the CS150 web tutor project to help you with any weakness you may have in the pre-requisite material from that course. The assessment test is designed to test your CS150 background and to make recommendations on areas for further study. Also there are on-line learning tasks, some of which are graded, with answers and explanations.
Because we haven't figured out a secure way to deliver the tests over the internet. Maybe next time.
Because we haven't figured that one out either.
Well that is one point of view. However our philosophy is that the personal progress is to help you and to help your instructors to help you. Your grade is determined by scores on the two test and Final exams on the textbook material and on the mid-term and final tests in the UNIX lab, on the programming assignments and course project as stated in the syllabus.
ANSWERS on the learning tasks have NO bearing on your grade.
The number of times you visit the WebSite has NO bearing on your grade.
Any comments, positive or negative, on the WebSite or course in general will have NO bearing on your grade.
If you give up on the Web course and attend the lectures instead, it will have NO bearing on your grade.
Of course, we reserve the right to bug you if you are not making progress. That is our job after all. BUT it will have NO bearing on your grade!!!
