Project Topics Narrative Description

Throughout recorded history the moulding of society has been directly linked to the research, development, application, and the incorporation of technology into society. It is quite easy to demonstrate this technological influence during the past half century with the incorporation of computer systems into all phases of society. While the skepticism remains of developing a technological solution for every social problem, many problems have indeed been either solved or significantly reduced by the application of current or "leading edge" technology.

The topics for the course project should focus on a societal problem with a technological solution to that problem. Since virtually every aspect of society has numerous problems facing the movement of society into the next few years or decade, there are almost an infinite number of possible topics to evaluate. Some broad and very general categories include: societal transportation, health and medicine, education, communication, entertainment, recreation, and the societies efforts to cope with the events of day to day living. Once a problem is identified, the task of identifying proposed solutions to the problem is a very large endeavor.

In an effort to help reduce the burden of selection of course project topics, the following guidelines are provided. Consider the simple size of the effort; your topics must be able to be completed by the end of the Spring semester. The technological element of the topic must be on the :leading edge" of technology; not simply another use of existing technology. The topic's domain problem must have a direct positive impact on some segment of societal living. The problem solution clearly must contain a well defined computational element. Overall, the proposed solution must clearly provide society with an improved state by eliminating or mitigating the problem. Briefly the proposed project topics must have a practical application to benefit society as a whole.

You should provide a listing of three proposed topics for a group's project. A few examples of preliminary sentences of the topic descriptions are provided:
Solve the traffic gridlock at the intersection of I-64 and I-264 by analyzing traffic flow data and providing an alternate mode of transportation.

Increase the productivity of office workers in a real estate agency by using computer assisted analysis of home attributes for potential buyer's comparison and evaluation.

Develop a system to assist planners of large corporations in identifying an accurate and timely budget for future years based upon current characteristics.

Provide a home medical diagnosis system that will reliably provide a diagnosis to ill society members of either minor, major, or emergency status so the member can seek appropriate medical support.
