TOPICS

• Terminology and basics of number systems.
• Abstractions and Technology: system hierarchy, overview of a computer; integrated circuit technology. (Chapter 1)
• Performance: measuring performance; metrics; choosing benchmarks; Amdahl's law; comparing and summarizing computer performance. (Chapter 2)
• Instruction Sets and Operations: an overview of computer organization and operation; operations and operands; basics of the MIPS assembly language; arithmetic, load/store and control instructions; instruction representation in machine language; examples of other (PowerPC and I80X86) instruction sets. (Chapter 3)
• Basics of Computer Logic: truth tables; logic equations; gates; combinatorial logic; clocks and timing. (Appendix B)
