Near the end of the course program the student should pass
a candidacy examination to become a Ph.D. candidate.
A candidacy exam is to test the following:

Background knowledge for dissertation research. A written critical review of literature is required.

State of the art knowledge on the dissertation topic including literature search.

Research plan: The student must write a detailed "research proposal" that includes the required resources
and the time table of carrying out the proposed research.
