A candidacy exam is to test the following:

1. Background knowledge for dissertation research. A written critical review of literature is required.
2. State of the art knowledge on the dissertation topic including literature search.
3. Research plan: The student must write a detailed "research proposal" that includes the required resources and the time table of carrying out the proposed research.
4. Research skills (methodology & communication skills).

The literature review and the research proposal should be submitted to the research guidance committee at least two weeks before the oral examination date.
