Master's Thesis

A Master's Thesis must exhibit a high standard of expository writing. It must represent evidence that the student is capable of obtaining and presenting a satisfactory solution to a problem in Computer Science of some complexity.

A Master's Thesis, Project Report or PhD Dissertation is EXPECTED to contain the following items:

  1. Background of the Research
  2. Justification of the Research
  3. Problem Definition
  4. State of the Art
  5. Problem Analysis
  6. Techniocal Solution
  7. Evaluation of Developed Solution
  8. Major Contributions
  9. Conclusions
  10. References/Bibliography

For a Master's Thesis the following three items are REQUIRED:

  1. A thorough review of the state of the art
  2. Some advancement in the state of the art, and
  3. Expository writing

For a PhD dissertation some significant contribution to the state of the art, something that is not trivial for experts in the field is REQUIRED.

Each Master's Thesis will be read and judged by a thesis committee consisting of the candidate's supervisor, a faculty member appointed by the supervisor, and a faculty member appointed by the Department through the Graduate Studies Committee. The candidate is required to present a seminar on the thesis topic. A copy of the thesis, conforming to any University requirements for MS Thesis, must be submitted to the Graduate Studies Committee for record keeping.

To register for MS Thesis, the candidate must first obtain the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee on the proposal. The Master's Thesis should address objectives similar to that addressed by the Master's Project. In addition, the study and deduction of general principles must be involved.
