Support of Internet protocol in GSM networks Hassam Afifi ENST Bretangne and INRIA Sophic Antipolis (France) The goal of this work is to propose an efficient infrastructure for the transport of IP on top of Cellular Global systems like the GSM, UMTS and D-AMPS in the USA. After a brief introduction of the context (global public cellular networks), I explain the motivation behind the introduction of a unique data network infrastructure underneath cellular networks. I give the motivation for IPv6 in general and for mobile-ipv6 in particular. I explain then the problems that have to be solved in the field of header compression, error recovery and mobility management and the state of the work in this field in the team. I show the current state of advance of this work and finally , I explain the collaborations on the global prototype with software radio components and low bit codecs provided by other teams in the project. ============================================================ Hossam Afifi is assistant professor at ENST Bretagne, and researcher in INRIA Sophia Antipolis (France). He has a B.Sc from Cairo University in 86, a M Sc. in Computer Science from University of Nice in INRIA Research Lab. in 89. He obtained his Ph.D. from INRIA in 93 in the usage of Routing techniques for optimizing X.400 Mail delivery with C. Huitema (advisor) He spent 6 months Post-Doc. in Washington University in St. Louis with Prof. Guru Parulkar on ATM host interfaces. Since 93 he is assistant professor in the ENST Bretagne (Rennes-France). Research interests are : Mobile IPv6 for GSM like networks, Optimization of Voice transport on the Internet in presence of losses and low bit rate transmission. He has two drafts in the ietf for mobility of IPv6 and transition of v4 to v6 protocols in the internet. ----------------------------------------------------------------
