Wavelet based image and video compression Dr. Hans L. Cycon Fachhochschule fuer Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin University of Applied Sciences Abstract Digital image processing and in particular video processing are highly data intensive i.e. memory and bandwidth consuming computer applications. Thus image and video compression get more and more important. Besides the conventional DCT transform coding methods, wavelet transforms have been established, having better still image rate distortion performance while being fast enough for real-time video implementation. This talk gives a survey on methods and implementations of high performance compression algorithms and contemporary and future standards (JPEG 2000, H26L,...) and their applications like multipoint videoconferencing over IP. Hans L. Cycon received his diploma in physics in 1975 and his Phd in mathematics in 1979 (habilitation 1984) from the Technical University Berlin, Germany. From 1985 trough 1990 he was with Siemens cooperation working on software development and software engineering for digital telecommunication systems. He was teaching mathematics and physics at the Telekom Fachhochschule Germany and is since 1995 Professor at FHTW teaching mathematics and signal processing. His publications fields (including a book) are mathematical physics and signal processing i.e. image coding. He is member of the german delegation of the ITU/ISO standardization committee for JPEG 2000 still image standard.
