Overview

NOTICE consists of sensor belts embedded in the roadway at regular intervals. Vehicles passing over a belt provide information about their travel directly to the belt. The collective information stored by the belts is used to make intelligent inferences about the occurrence of traffic incidents. Each vehicle will have the following equipment:

  • an event data recorder (EDR) to record location, speed, etc.
  • a transceiver $T_h$ for handshaking with the belt
  • a transceiver $T_d$ for exchanging data with the belt

NOTICE provides secure and privacy-preserving communications between vehicles and the belts, efficiently propagates incident information to vehicles, and infers the presence of traffic congestion without driver intervention.

Summer 2010 REU

The goal for the summer was to produce a simple prototype of our NOTICE traffic notification system using IRIS motes. We performed a demo of the system in a campus parking garage, where we placed one mote on side of the road and two other motes, connected to a laptop, in a vehicle that drove by the roadside mote. The roadside mote used a magnetometer to detect the presence of the vehicle. Once the vehicle was detected, the roadside mote initiated communication with the motes inside the vehicle. We had two equipped vehicles that dropped off data with the roadside mote and then picked up data left by the previous vehicle.

We produced a 3-minute video of the demo and a post on our research group's blog.
