INSITE is a four-year program of research conducted at Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University and funded by the National Science Foundation. INSITE is evaluating multiple strategies for enhancing retention of undergraduate students in computer science, especially women and under served minority students. Our research includes the following practices:

  • Creation of an inclusive classroom climate
  • Encouragement of inclusive teaching practices and inclusive student-faculty mentoring relationships
  • Use of collaborative learning and pair programming
  • Realistic preview of careers in computer science
  • Stress management and coping skills
  • Dissemination of empirically validated best practices for student retention at a conference to be held in Virginia Beach in October 2008
