COMMENTS:

Dr Nelson has definitely been one of the most influential teachers I have had so far. The presentations and lectures were always well planned and he was always enthusiastic about the content. His assignment expectations are very high and he always enjoyed reviewing each team's development. He wasn't happy all the time with our results, but we came together towards the end of the class. The nature of the P2P assignments required the entire class to work together in testing the applications. It was refreshing to learn about cutting edge technologies and to actually build a P2P system. His six Peer to Peer assignments were difficult, but challenging and functional. My lab partner and I worked on our assignments at least 20 - 30 hours a week. Although, we had a big learning curve. It was by far one of the most difficult programming projects I have had, but the final results were rewarding. My CS-150 class was a nice break :-D. The code we developed can be reused in real world projects and I learned a ton of new programming techniques. My only negative comment would have to be with the course prerequisites. Many students had a rough learning curve with network programming and multithreading. Although, the name of the course itself is probably a good enough indicator of difficulty in the area of programming :-D. The only suggestion I have would be for Dr. Nelson to allow students to develop Peer products from the onset of the class. One team spent time developing a Napster style server which they had to upgrade to an autonomous peer later in the semester. It would be nice if the next P2P class had a server ready to go. Dr. Nelson gave us free reign on the development, but I think it would have been helpful if he had discussed implementations in class as well. I will most definitely recommend this course to my friends and colleagues. Although, I would warn them about the intensive programming requirements. Dr. Nelson is a top notch professor! Sean P.
