Tableau's data visualization software is provided through the Tableau for Teaching program.

In-Class Work 3 (ICW3)

Goal: Train yourself in decoding charts so that you can better understand how virtually every single visualization can be described using the language and rules of visual encoding and decomposed into low-level graphical components.

Gather into groups of 3-4 students to work this exercise. Choose a group representative who will present your findings to the class when we gather back together.

Your group will look at 6 different charts and identify

  • the data items and the marks used to encode those data items
  • the data attributes and the channels used to encode the attributes
