In-Class Work 3 (ICW3)

See http://www.cs.odu.edu/~mweigle/CS725-S17/Guidelines for general information on ICW assignments.

The goal of this assignment is to match data with appropriate idioms.

Task 1

Consider the following descriptions of data available at http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/ about the Summer Olympic games:

  1. number of gold medals won by the US between 1900-2012
  2. number of gold medals won by each country in 2000
  3. percentage of total gold medals won by each of the top 10 medal winners (see the 'Country Medal Leaders' table)

For each of the descriptions:

  • identify the attribute types (categorical, ordinal, quantitative)
  • indicate the appropriate idiom(s) for graphing the data
  • give a justification for why the data fits that idiom based on the idiom definitions in Chapter 7

Note that I am not asking you to generate the charts, just describe what idioms would be appropriate.

Task 2

Using the data available at http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/ about the Summer Olympic games, describe the data that would be suitable for the following idioms:

  1. stacked bar chart
  2. scatterplot
  3. scatterplot matrix (SPLOM)
  4. pie chart

For each of these, you must give a justification for why the data fits that idiom based on the idiom definitions in Chapter 7.

Submission

Add the solution file username1-username2-username3-ICW3.md to the ICW3 Gitlab project

You may use either GitLab or Google Docs for notes. If you use Google Docs, make sure to share the document with me (ODU username: mweigle) and your other group members (using their @odu.edu usernames).
