Homework 5

Due: February 14, 2018 before 9:30am

The goal of this week's assignment is to begin investigation of a topic for visualization.

Assignment

Propose at least 3 questions (about the same topic) that you'd like to answer via visualization.

  • Make sure that the questions are ones that would be appropriate for visualization. For example, "What is Les Miles' highest winning percentage?" is just a matter of sorting and can be answered without visualization.
  • Good questions typically involve data from multiple data sources, looking for correlations or patterns in the data. For example, "How have CO2 levels and air temperature changed over time?" or "How have the number of hours per year of nuisance flooding in Norfolk changed over time?" (for the answer and some other nice charts, see http://coastalslr.blogspot.com/2018/01/sea-level-rise-for-hampton-roads-2017.html).

Identify possible data sources, including URLs. Note the potential data sources that are listed on our Links page (under "Data Sources")

Map each question to an abstract task(s). Describe both the actions and targets of the tasks. Use the terminology found in Chapter 3.

You may submit this as a Markdown (.md) file in a Gitlab or GitHub project or as a PDF (original can be Word document or LaTeX).

We will discuss your topics and questions during class next week.

Submission

  • Click on HW5 under Homeworks
  • If you generate a PDF, upload your solution. If you wrote Markdown, provide a clickable link to your file.
  • Make sure to "Submit" your assignment.
