In-Class Work 6 (ICW6)

The goal of this exercise is to practice chart critique and remaking.

Gather into groups of 2-3 students

Part 1

Read one (and only one!) of the following blog posts about remaking a chart from the Policy Viz blog (Jonathan Schwabish):

Consider how he goes about remaking the chart in the blog post.

  • What are the factors in his re-design?
  • Do you agree with his re-design?

Part 2

Pick one of the other blog posts and only read the setup -- don't read about his proposed re-make.

Work with your group to propose 1-2 alternatives to the given chart. Use the whiteboard to sketch out your alternatives.

As you work, think about these questions:

  • What are the goals (tasks) of the original chart?
  • What are the marks and channels of the original chart?
  • What are the factors you considered in your re-design?
  • Does your re-design meet the goals of the original chart?

Choose a group representative who will present your findings to the class when we gather back together.
