Paper Assignment Notes:

Paper Assignment #1

Assigned: Tues, Jan 15
Due: Part A: Thurs, Jan 17 (before 9:30am)     Part B: Tues, Jan 22 (before 9:30am)

Read [Kes07] and apply the techniques described to the reading of [YMF06]. Remember that a full three-pass reading of a paper will take at least a couple of hours, so don't start this at the last minute.

Part A

Answer the following questions:

  1. What are the advantages of using VANETs for vehicle-to-vehicle communication over using the existing cellular system? (You may quote the authors here.)

  2. Explain the difference between comfort applications and safety applications.

  3. What are some of the traditional assumptions made in MANET simulations that are not applicable to the realities of VANETs?

  4. For which type of application (comfort, safety, or both) is routing needed? Explain. If routing is not needed for one type of application, explain this as well.

  5. What is the main focus of this paper?

  6. What contributions do the authors of this paper make?

Part B

[YMF06] contains many good references, but also has several grammatical errors.

  1. Identify two instances of grammatical errors in the paper. Explain the errors and how they should be fixed.

  2. Find two interesting papers mentioned and complete a first pass reading (according to [Kes07]) of them. Answer the five Cs for each paper.
