Alex Pothen

Alex Pothen is a Professor of computer science at Old Dominion University and leads the Center for Computational Science. He is the Director of the CSCAPES Institute funded by the Department of Energy, with Old Dominion, Sandia National Labs, Argonne National Lab, Ohio State and Colorado State Universities as member institutions.

Alex's research interests are in combinatorial scientific computing (CSC): aspects of scientific computing that can be formulated as discrete problems and solved by combinatorial algorithms. These interests also include parallel computing, the interaction of architectures with algorithms, bioinformatics, and computational biology.

Alex currently teaches advanced courses on Combinatorial Scientific Computing, High Performance Computing, Approximation Algorithms, Algorithms in Computational Molecular Biology, and Computational Systems Biology. Alex's research group meets for weekly seminars throughout the year, and students are welcome.
