Classroom Rules Some of these have been superceded by Covid-19 rules, as well as, the different class delivery methods necessitated by the virus. DISABILITY ISSUES. ODU is committed to ensuring equal access to all qualified students with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities ACT. The Office of Educational Accessibility (OEA) is the campus office that works with students who have disabilities to provide and/or arrange reasonable accommodations. OEA is located at 1021 Student Success Center and their phone # is (757) 683-4655. Their website : http://www.odu.edu/educationalaccessability If you experience a disability which impacts your ability to access any aspect of my class, present me with an OEA accommodation letter so that we can work together to ensure that appropriate accommodations are available to you. If you do not have an OEA letter, then schedule an appointment with them. HONOR CODE. You signed it and I enforce it, strictly. If you don't know what it says, find out! Remember, honor code violations are listed in your official transcript. 400/500 LEVEL CLASSES. When graduate and undergraduate students are mixed in the same lecture, those two groups will NOT be competing against each other for grades. Separate grade lists with their own curve, if necessary, will be maintained by me. Also, graduate students cannot receive a "D" grade. Below a "C" is an "F" for graduate students. In addition, there will normally be extra requirements (projects, papers, etc.) for graduate students. CELL PHONES & BEEPERS. They are to be turned off when in my classroom as they can disrupt the lecture. Offending students will be asked to leave that day's class if this is not observed. ARRIVING LATE. This is also disruptive. Students who are more than five minutes late will NOT be admitted to the classroom. COURTESY. Your questions and comments are important but I require that you raise your hand and be recognized. Just blurting them out is unacceptable as is talking in general. OFFICE HOURS. Walk-in office hours and agreed upon appointments are the ONLY times that I will service student requests for anything outside the classroom. Usually, I have between 150 and 280 students in my classes during any one semester and if I allowed even a small portion of those students to knock on my door anytime they wanted, I'd never get any work done. ASSIGNMENTS. For large programming projects (i.e. CS 460) where I require an executable file to grade, I mean what I say --- turn in an executable. I will NOT search the web for DLL's and I will NOT compile anything. It will be as if you submitted a program that did not run at all. Distance Learning assignments will NOT be returned as the mail system is error-prone and near max capacity. On short answer type assignments, hand written responses are not acceptable. This is, after all, a computer class. On Programming assignments, there is a shorthand code for comments as follows: O = output issues F = format/indent/readability C = poor/insufficient comments D = documentation? structure chart?/poor naming CU = cumbersome EFF = inefficient RQ = did not meet requirements LA = late TERM PAPERS. I want hardcopy for all term papers. E-mail is not acceptable as I'll go blind using the small screen. E-mail is OK for small submissions. All term papers are to be bound in some acceptable manner (stapled, folder, etc.). For distance learning (DL) students, E-mail may be specified for submission. On returned turnpapers there is a shorthand code for comments as follows: LS = little short S = short VS = very short L = long VL = very long PR = proof read (spelling, syntax) F = format issues (need both left AND right justification) TR = text as reference C = content issues D = dated references/content N = footnotes/end notes inadequate LA = late St = not bound/stapled Hc = no hard copy POSTING FINAL GRADES. I do NOT post final grades. You must access LEO online to get them. I DO NOT respond to questions concerning when grades will be available on LEO. I don't control that. They will be there when the Registrar's staff gets around to putting them there. ATTENDANCE. Attendance is not required. However YOU are responsible for all information delivered in your absence. TESTS. The following eight items pertain to all tests. 1. All of my tests are open book/notes. In fact you can bring anything that you want to the test. I expect you to be able to apply your knowledge to situations showing concept understanding. Copying a paragraph from the book can NEVER be a completely correct answer. 2. For non-language classes there are only two kinds of questions: short answer essay and numeric answer. Short answer is just that. It should take no more than 1-4 sentences. Students who try to impress me with their knowledge by writing page-long answers only create the opposite effect. To me, long responses look like "shotgun" answers where students do not really know the correct response so they write down all they know (or can find in the book) hoping that the right answer is in there somewhere. "Shotgun" answers do not earn many partial credit points. 3. For numeric answer type questions, show your work. If I can follow the logic, I can give partial credit. Simply putting the wrong answer, without showing work, precludes me from giving any credit. 4. When I say "time's up" signalling that the time period for the test has expired, any student who continues to write will earn a ZERO for that test. There will be NO exceptions. 5. When you are using separate sheets for answers, your responses are to be in NUMERICAL ORDER on those sheets. I don't like to hunt around for answers. A 10 POINT PENALTY will be the result of failure to comply. 6. Distance Learning tests are NOT sent out via the mail system. They are posted on the appropriate web page 15 minutes prior to the test start time for downloading. Graded tests will NOT be returned for the same reasons that Distance Leraning assignments are not returned. 7. In some classes I give take-home tests. These are to be submitted in hardcopy for the same reason as term paper submissions. Hand written take-home tests are NOT acceptable for the same reason as assignments. DL is the exception as all submissions are to be via E-mail. Multiple pages will be stapled together by you for takehome tests. 8. I use all tests except the final exam as a teaching tool in that I go over the tests, question by question, in class. If you are too busy to attend class on that day, do not expect me to repeat that service for you privately, even during office hours. WHINING. I do not respond to whining. JOKES. You are not required to laugh at any of my questionably humorous statements.
