CS 454/554 System &Network Administration

The objective of this course is to introduce students to administer networked Unix workstations, and local area networks.

In the network component students will be introduced to issues involved in the administration of small, medium, and large computer networks. This will include performance issues, management tools, routing, security, NIS, and name serving. Students will learn trouble shooting techniques for local area networks, and be able to make practical design recommendations for congested networks.

In the system administration component students will learn to install and maintain a Unix workstation in a networked environment. This will include disks file management, printer management, startup &shutdown issues, user account management, security on a Unix system, backup &restore, and managing system resources.

Students will install the Unix operating system, and network the workstation as a course project.
