NSF-Sponsored Workshop on

Promoting Collaborative Research in Computers and Communications

Between US and Middle Eastern Researchers

This is a one-day workshop to be held on Monday January 3rd  in conjunction with the 3rd ACS/IEEE International Conference on Computer Systems and Applications -Cairo, Egypt.   The goal of this NSF-sponsored workshop is to promote common and collaborative research projects between the US and Middle Eastern researchers in the areas of computers and communications. In addition, the workshop will give a chance for the US researchers to have an international perspective and understanding of the research issues facing their counterparts from Middle Eastern universities and research institutions. Another objective for the workshop is to increase the enrollment of Middle Eastern graduate students in the Ph.D. programs in computer science and engineering at USA universities through direct personnel interaction between the US professors and the prospective students.

The workshop will be in the form of a series of presentations and panel discussions by prominent US and Middle Eastern researchers. The workshop program will focus on all aspects of computers, communications relevant to the expertise of the workshop participants and the immediate needs and capabilities of the Middle Eastern countries. The panel members will give insight into current hot issues and will exchange ideas and present results of ongoing research in the areas listed below (the list is tentative and may be modified to accommodate the research interests of the workshop participants):

Agent and Knowledge Base Technology

Data Mining and Database Applications

Electronic Commerce and E-Services

Grid and Cluster Computing

High Performance Networking and Protocols

Internet Services and Applications

Real-time Communications Services (VoIP, Gaming, video)

Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks

Multimedia Information Management and Exchange

Overlay and Programmable Networks

Security and Cryptography

Wireless, Cellular and Mobile Communications

The workshop will be organized as follows:

Current Research Projects Sessions:

There will be three such sessions. In each session four researchers will give presentations about their own research projects. Each presentation will be 20 minutes long followed by 5 minutes for questions/discussion.

Panel Discussions:

There will be three panels: one for the USA researchers, one for the Middle Eastern researchers and one joint panel. The focus of each panel will be on what needs to be done to enhance the level of cooperation between the two sides.

Keynote speakers:

During lunch and dinner, a keynote speaker is expected to address the workshop. We plan to invite one speaker from the American side and one from the Middle Eastern side.

Graduate Students Recruiting

In the aftermath of 9/11, the US universities have seen a dramatic decrease of enrollment of Middle Eastern Ph.D. students in Computer Science and Engineering and this workshop will provide a good opportunity for the US professors who are going to participate in the workshop to encourage and recruit high quality graduate students to apply and enroll in the US universities.
