Admissions

The University offers an opportunity for graduate degree or non-degree study. The student beginning at Old Dominion may select to enroll in either the fall, spring or summer semester.

The admissions process has a significant impact on the success of a graduate program. At a time of declining enrollments and changing clientele, it is very critical that the admissions process be simple and that responses to prospective students be accurate and prompt. The Office of Admissions utilizes a system that entails scanning the application and accompanying materials into an online system named "the Graduate Admissions Document Management System for Graduate Program directors and staff."

The GPDs access the materials on-line and after evaluation, the decisions are sent electronically to the admissions office where letters to the applicants are generated and mailed. The User's Guide for the Admissions Document Management System is located at the end of Appendix D. Additionally, a spreadsheet summarizing applicant information and their status is updated and sent via email to GPDs every two weeks. International and Distance Learning admissions are processed separately and do not utilize the scanning system.

The Office of International Admissions does not send out graduate application packets. They rely on GPDs to prescreen potential applicants and decide when and if to send out the application or have the student fill out the application on the web. The OIA sends credentials packets, along with transcript evaluation information, to GPDs after all materials have arrived. The decision form is completed by the GPD and returned to the International Admissions Office.
