Advising

All degree-seeking graduate students must secure academic counseling as they seek to fulfill degree requirements. Non-degree students are strongly urged to seek academic counseling. Please note that non-immigrants on J or F visas may not enroll as non-degree students. Advising may be performed by either GPDs, who have general responsibility for graduate student advising, or by graduate advisors. This handbook uses the term synonymously.

It is the responsibility of the GPD to:

  • Counsel with students on course selections and assist in planning programs of study
  • Advise non-degree students for enrollment in those programs or courses which require advising of all students.
  • Sign student registration forms or remove advising blocks, as appropriate
  • Ensure that students who are not taking courses but using facilities in their final semester of study register for one credit hour of research.
