Certification for Graduation

All candidates who qualify for advanced degrees or certificates of advanced study must file an Application for Graduation by established deadlines as set forth in the University Catalog. Requirements for programs of study are outlined in the catalog in effect at the time of initial enrollment.

This process begins when the student completes the first page of the application and returns it to the Registrar's Office. The certification portion will be forwarded to the GPD from the Registrar's Office. Key information to check is the Catalog Year and applicable requirements, balance of lower/upper level courses, if the student has regular status or provisional, if all requirements have been met and you are converting the student to regular status. Complete the form and list only the required courses that do not appear on the transcript. If there are any courses that need to be revalidated, ensure that a copy of grad Form 5 has been submitted for each course.

The Registrar's Office will:

  • Receive formal applications for graduation and completed graduation certification
  • Review student records for certification of eligibility to graduate
  • Receive copies of approved theses and dissertations for binding
  • Consult GPD for clarification, etc.

It is the responsibility of the GPD to:

  • Determine whether students have completed all requirements for the graduate degree
  • Approve theses/dissertations
  • Evaluate and approve oral defense of theses/dissertations
  • Evaluate and approve written and oral examinations of non-thesis students
  • Notify the Registrar's Office regarding student's graduation status by Oct 1, Mar. 1 and Aug. 1 each year

It is the responsibility of the Thesis/Dissertation Committee to:

  • Provide guidance to the writing of the thesis/dissertation
  • Approve thesis/dissertation
  • Evaluate and approve oral defense of thesis/dissertation
