Back to Graduate Teaching Assistants

Outside Employment

Graduate assistants are not permitted to accept outside employment during the period of their appointment, except under unusual circumstances and only with the approval of the dean or equivalent administrator upon the written recommendation of the appropriate graduate program director and department chair. In any case, outside employment permitted as an exception to the general policy should normally not exceed 20 percent of the maximum workload.

The prohibition on outside employment includes additional employment by the University or Research Foundation. In particular, graduate teaching assistants should not be paid for part-time teaching for the University in addition to their normal responsibilities.
