Watch Out For Falling Pumpkins

Crisp, cool mornings, warm afternoons, skittering leaves and, of course, falling pumpkins all define fall at Old Dominion University. The Society of Physics Students chapter at Old Dominion held its annual pumpkin drop October 28th on the south side of the Batten Arts and Letters Building.

Students designed contraptions to catch the orange gourds as they plummeted earthward from the ten-story building. Tests based on physics principles were performed on the falling pumpkins. Catchers were better cushioned than previous years and many withstood the impact of the speeding pumpkins when hit - even many of the pumpkins remained in tack!

For more information on future drops, call Charles Hyde-Wright, professor of physics and SPS sponsor at 683-5853 or chyde@odu.edu.
