Who is at Risk for Diabetes?
Individuals for which one or more of the following are true:
- Family history of diabetes
- Over 45 and overweight
- Overweight and little or no exercise during a usual day
- Random blood glucose level above 140
- Women who have had a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth
In addition, your risk increases if you are a member of one of the
following ethnic groups:
- AFRICAN AMERICANS. African Americans are 1.6 times as likely to
have diabetes as the general population. An estimated 2 million African
Americans have diabetes.
- HISPANICS. Hispanics are more than twice as likely to have diabetes.
It is estimated that more than 1 million Hispanics in the United States
have diabetes.
- NATIVE AMERICAN. Native Americans as a group are 2.7 times as likely
to have diabetes as the general population.
