The ADA is both a professional and a private not for profit, voluntary organization with state and local affiliates and chapters. It serves people with diabetes, their family and friends, health professionals and research scientists involved in diabetes related activities. The organization funds research and education activities; sponsors educational programs, consensus meetings and special symposia; administers a recognition program for diabetes outpatient education; develops professional guidelines for diabetes care; and serves as an advocate for diabetes on social, medical, and research issues in the legislative and public health arenas.
