- Weibel, S. "Metadata: the foundations of resource description",
D-Lib Magazine, 1(1), July 1995.
This very short article is one of the first (the first?) publications
on Dublin Core. Given the importance of Dublin Core in all DL projects,
reading the first publication will give some insight into how metadata
is used in (and out) of a DL environment.
- Lagoze, C. "Keeping Dublin Core Simple: Cross-Domain Discovery or Resource
Description?", D-Lib Magazine, 7(1), January 2001.
This is a very readable introduction to Dublin Core and the concept of qualifier
and how qualifiers can be used to accommodate different uses and
communities. It illustrates the natural tension between simplicity
and usefulness and shows how far DC has come.

Comparison of the Two Approaches for Establishing Metadata Schemes in
the Digital Environment", Proceedings of the 60th Annual Meeting of the
American Society for Information Science (ASIS) , November, 1997.
This paper also appeared in a later version as "A Comparison of the Two Traditio
ns of Metadata Development", JASIS, 50(13), pp. 1209-1217.
Not everyone uses metadata the same... This paper illustrates how computer
scientists and librarians traditionally view metadata differently.
