CS725-S18: In-Class Work 4 (ICW4)

The goal of this exercise is to explore the difference between the discover task (exploratory visualization) and the present task (explanatory visualization).

Instructions

Gather into groups of 2-3 students

Read part of the Enrico Bertini's article From Data Visualization to Interactive Data Analysis (stop at "Quo vadis interaction?").

For the visualizations in each of the articles below, identify it as an exploratory (discover) visualization or an explanatory (present) visualization and explain how you came to that conclusion. Not all of the visualizations will cleanly fit into one category or the other, many are on a continuum, but explain your thoughts.

  1. RevEx tool -- not a visualization itself, but what type does it enable?
  2. On Yelp, Doctors Get Reviewed Like Restaurants And It Rankles
  3. Bombs in your backyard
  4. LeBron James Scores 5,995th Playoff Point, Taking the Record From Michael Jordan
  5. Hurricane Irma is One of the Strongest Storms in History
  6. Represent
  7. How Guns Move Across State Lines

After reviewing these, come up with your own definition or explanation of exploratory (discover) vs. explanatory (present) visualizations. What are some of the main differences between the two types?

Choose a group representative who will present your findings to the class when we gather back together.
