Semester Project

Description

The idea of the project is to take the knowledge and background that you are learning this semester about information visualization and put it to good use in a new, creative effort.

A real key to the project, however, is to select a data set that people will find interesting and intriguing. Even better would be to select a data set with a clearly identified set of "users" or "analysts" who care deeply about that data. Select a topic that people want to know more about! I cannot emphasize strongly enough the importance of your topic and data set.

The best projects are ones that allow the user to look at data in multiple ways (through linked charts, for instance).

Project Guidance - including data analysis and developing questions, chart idiom notes, and project inspirations (added 2/24/19 -MCW)

Requirements

Detailed requirements will be found in the individual Milestone assignments, but here are general guidelines.

  • This is an individual assignment. No group work allowed.
  • Although you may use tools like Excel, Tableau, Open Refine, Google Charts for your own analysis, your final visualization product must built with D3.v5.
  • The goal is to present your findings about your chosen topic. Although you may do exploratory analysis in understanding your data, your visualization should focus on showing the audience what you learned.
  • You are not limited to a single chart, but if you use multiple charts, the entire visualization must be cohesive.
    • don't put charts on separate webpages
    • ideally the multiple charts would be viewable in a single webpage view (i.e. no scrolling)

Milestone Due Dates

  • Feb 20 - Milestone 1 - begin investigation of a topic for visualization, dataset, questions to be explored
  • Mar 6 - Milestone 2 - begin the exploratory data analysis process, brainstorm (FdS sheet 1), create an initial chart
  • Mar 20 - Milestone 3 - FdS analysis of project design (formatted sheets)
  • Check-ins - I would encourage you to meet with me periodically between Milestone 2 and Milestone 4 to get feedback on your project. Send an email to set up an appointment. We can setup WebEx meetings as well.
  • Apr 17 - Milestone 4 - final implementation, project demos

Grading

50 points

  • Milestone 1 (dataset, initial questions, targets) - 10 points
  • Milestone 2 (exploratory data analysis) - 10 points
  • Milestone 3 (FdS analysis) - 10 points
  • Milestone 4
    • final implementation - 10 points
    • writeup - 10 points
