New Forum Requirements

CS300

These requirements replace the previous Forum requirements previously assigned. THIS IS AN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT! The original Forum Project was a group presentation with groups being 4-5 students. Covid-19 has made groups largely impractical so here is what the forum is for this semester.

Pick a topic from the list below. Write a three page paper on the topic with at least two references showing both sides of the topic clearly.

Computers should be incorporated into athletic events to eliminate the human errors made by sports officials. This incorporation would allow the best athlete or best team to be victorious and not have athletes or teams loose because of an error by an official. These systems should be restricted to professional and Olympic competitions. Some systems have also been developed to give sports teams a competitive advantage, such as small hearing devices to relay football plays to the quarterback.

The digital book and the first large, public virtual library. Books will never disappear - but by 2010 an electronic form of the book will have begun to displace tomes for millions of readers. The first large library to go strictly virtual will be at universities or other, specialized facilities that serve a geographically scattered community of users.

Individuals should have open access to the actual cost information of automobile prices to the dealers. This access should be via either home computers or centrally located systems in public libraries or court houses or the like (the "digital blue book"). This would allow the public to purchase automobiles for a fair price without excessive dealer profits, etc. IE the "digital car shop" that links buyers directly to the manufacturer, doing away with the dealers completely.

II-B

Computer research has expanded to provide a practical home online automobile diagnostic system. This system provides non-technical car owners factual information and advice on the required or expected repairs to automobiles. Has the back-yard mechanic totally disappeared - or will it be the car-repair business itself?

III-A

Computer monitoring systems to catch criminals has advanced. These include systems to catch traffic violators, shop-lifters, car thieves, computer trespassers, hackers, etc.

III-B

Computer systems should be developed that provide users open access to all files of information about themselves including credit ratings and reports. And a means for finding any additional information that may be available about them such as social security/retirement information.

III-C

Access of criminal information of their children's teachers and new neighbors should also be available.

Platooning is a term used to describe computerized vehicular travel using smart-cars. Automated highway systems will involve equipping cars with a device that allows a highway system to assume control of the car utilizing global positioning satellites. Some existing systems in progress include ALVINN (Autonomous Land Vehicle in the Neural Network), and Prometheus.

IV-B

Automated systems should be developed that provide drivers with traffic information whenever accidents or other incidents cause delays in traveling. This information should be brought to the attention of the driver in suitable time so that the driver can alter his proposed route and avoid the traffic backup. Other technologically advanced traffic systems have been developed or are in the process of being developed and tested. These include web sites on local tunnels and cameras to monitor highways and the government sponsored ITS (Intelligent Transportation System).

IV-C

Air travel is using computer technology in many areas. Air traffic control and the Traffic alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), airline reservation systems, and baggage handling systems are just a few areas.

The perfect blackboard for a classroom would be a blank white wall. It could be used to show a video clip, project a computer screen image, or even be written on with special pens. The wall is touch-sensitive, and a printer is attached to it that can be used to print whatever is currently displayed. The uses are limitless.

V-B

At enrollment into school, each child receives a personal digital assistant, which is returned when the child moves to a different school. The PDA can directly capture text sent from the instructor's computer. In association, the PDA should tie into a computer system that provides for the centralization of all course and class grades for the school. These grade files should be made available to both the children and parent to allow them to have a complete status of the children's education standing on a weekly basis.

V-C

Computerized testing is currently available in many environments. A computer system should be developed that would provide high school students with the capability of taking all of their class tests online. The system should allow the students to take test only on the given day with the results provided immediately upon completing the test.

Smart-Homes should have a computer system that would monitor energy usage and waste. A built in "wizard" would suggest improvements or make immediate alterations for maximum efficiency. It would also automatically decrease or increase power when the residents leave the home or return, and will allow voice activation. Other features of the home can be automated as well.

VI-B

Computer research should be expanded to develop a practical home computer-based safety and security system. This system should use the family television and standard telephone service along with security cameras and sensors placed in and around the home. This system would then be used in place of or to augment the local police and fire department officers. The use of digital floor plans of buildings should be provided to all rescue systems.

VI-C

A computer based telephone answering system that provide home users the capability of answering their telephones using their televisions and the standard telephone service. This allows people to both hold a phone conversation or use a picture phone while still being able to view their televisions and not miss critical parts of the television program.

VI-D

Computer systems for monitoring visitors to a home have been developed that allow home owners to have displayed on a second window on their television a picture of persons who have activated the homeowners doorbell. A microphone and speaker can also be installed so that the homeowner can respond to the visitor without having to leave the area of the television. This would allow the user to answer the door and not miss critical parts of television programs. The user could also cause a recording to play that tells the visitor that no one is available to answer the door at this time and take a message from the visitor.

VI-E

Remember Rosie, the Jetson rusty mechanical domestic? Experts predict that housecleaning robots capable of doing the tasks you hate most may be commercially available within a decade. Housecleaning robots will have to feature substantially advanced navigation capabilities and significantly improved interfaces.

The idea for computer systems that are modeled after the human brain has been suggested. If this system could be constructed out of organic material (already being done with transistors) they could be implanted in human heads to correct defective parts of the brain. Alzheimers, mental retardation, some forms of blindness and deafness could be eliminated.

VII-B

Scientists are currently using computers in the mapping of genes in human DNA in the human genome project. As the mapping was completed ahead of schedule, computers could be used to allow for a variety of gene selections, possibly even for gene selection of children.

VII-C

Computer research should be expanded to provide a practical home online medical diagnostic system. This system would use the family television and standard telephone service and not require either a home computer nor specific computer expertise. This system would eliminate the need for long waiting lines at doctor=s offices for minor or insignificant medical problems and provide for a quicker application of remedies for minor illnesses. The tricorder used by Dr. McCoy in Star Trek may not be far away.

VII-D

Cell Repair Technology. One of the many dreams born of research in nanotechnology is the ability to deploy inside the human body mechanical agents so tiny they could travel unfelt within the bloodstream and even effect cell repair at the molecular level.=s offices for minor or insignificant medical problems and provide for a quicker application of remedies for minor illnesses. The tricorder used by Dr. McCoy in Star Trek may not be far away.

Computers are being used in the area of dentistry more than ever before. The current areas include intelligent toothbrushes, digital x-rays, etc.

VII-F

Telesurgery, when eminent surgeons could not be on hand personally, but could make themselves available via telepresence. Or if, under battlefield conditions, it's too risky to transport a physician to a wounded soldier. Most researchers feel that virtual reality in medical technology will be used primarily to enable experts to assist a surgeon from a remote location, but...what if?

VII-G

Laws have been passed requiring biometrics to be used in Digital Passports. Should this be extended to other areas like credit card security, etc.?
