History of the Phone Call

1876: The very first phone call was made on March 10, 1876 between Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant, Thomas A. Watson.

1915: The first long distance phone call from New York to California was made. It took 14,000 miles of copper wire and about 130,000 telephone poles to link the East coast to the West coast.

1921: The first international call was made from Key West Florida and Havana Cuba on April 11, 1921.

1924: AT&T begins Trans-Atlantic telephone service.

1934: AT&T inaugurates trans-Pacific telephone service, initially between the US and Japan.

1946: The Mobile Telephone Service was introduced. It had only 3 radio channels available and call set-up required manual operation by a mobile operator.

1951: The ability for customers to dial long distance calls is introduced. Before this, all long distance calls required operator assistance.

1973: Martin Cooper makes the first analogue mobile phone class using a prototype model.

1980s: Cable networks are starting to be used to provide telephone service.
