Week Identifying the Competition & Solution Characteristics

Contents:

At this point you should have the determined the following:

  1. Problem Statement
  2. Problem Characteristics supported by referenced research

1 Process Flow

The next step in the analysis of the societal problem is to understand a “Day in the Life” of those who are suffering. The research and interviews that have been performed should provide each team with the ability to diagram the way in which the problem is solved/handled currently.

As a team, analyze this process and determine where additional computer-based intervention is needed. Pay attention to external factors affect ing the process. This could include: politics, patterns, schedules, software limitations, policies/regulations, and other influences.

Multiple diagrams may be required.

2 Solution Characteristics

This next step in the research process is to determine a set of Solutions Characteristics. These should align with each of the problem characteristics. Consider “computer-ese” when preparing the characteristics.

Definition: Computer-ese - a vocabulary associated with computer-based software. E.g. mobile, wireless, API, App, seamless.

3 Competition Matrix

Once you have determined the solution characteristics, your team must research the competition.

The competition is anyone currently trying to solve the same (or closely related) problem.

Summarize your research results in a table that we will call the Competition Matrix.

Please visit the websites of previous CS 410 teams to see examples. The columns and rows will represent the competitor and the solution characteristics their product provides.

You will then add your solution to the matrix, identifying the solution characteristics your product will provide. Innovation is critical.
