Lab 1 - Descriptive Paper

Contents:

All Lab Materials (e.g., glossaries, outlines, figures, and tables) are working/living files. Your team must keep them up-to-date throughout the semester. Maintain proper version control of all files. When in doubt… ask what tool to use.

1 Outline

Lab 1 (Descriptive Paper) is the culmination of your work from CS 410 last semester. Take your presentations (Feasibility, Design, and Prototype Design) and collect the core material (e.g., statistics, figures, tables, risks, and development process).

  1. As a team, collaboratively construct and reevaluate the outline for Lab 1, making changes where appropriate.

  2. Keep your working draft in your Team Google Drive Folder

  3. Post this outline (with version number) on your team website.

    • You may embed the working draft Google Doc on your team site.
    • Once your collaborative Lab 1 outline is finalized, post a PDF version on your team site.
  4. Review the Lab 1 Outline Template infra.

1. Introduction

Introduce the CS 410 product and the approach to demonstrating its characteristics through prototyping (essentially an abstract). This section should

  1. be approximately one page in length.
  2. summarize the societal problem with some reference/date support.
  3. outline problem and needed solution characteristics.
  4. introduce your product by name as the solution.

2. X Product Description

Provide a top-level description of CS 410 product for the average reader. Provide a summary of the solution –- and its goals and objectives. This section should be one paragraph minimum.

2.1. Key Product Features and Capabilities

What does it do? What is significant/unique/innovative about it? What does it accomplish? Describe how this solves the problem.

2.2. Major Components (Hardware/Software)

Provide an overview of the hardware needed to support the solution. Describe how it is structured based on CS 410 MFCD. Define and describe the software to be developed.

3. Identification of Case Study

For whom is this product being developed? Why? Who else might use this in the future?

4. X Product Prototype Description

Provide a top-level description of the CS 411W prototype as it relates to the end product from CS 410 (i.e., the goal). Are capabilities reduced or eliminated? Simulated – modeled?> Include a table of comparison between RWP and Prototype either in section 4, 4.1 or 4.2

4.1. Prototype Architecture (Hardware/Software)

How will the prototype be structured to demonstrate key features of the CS 410 product. Provide describe the Prototype MFCD.

4.2. Prototype Features and Capabilities

What does the prototype demonstrate? Why is that significant in showing how the problem is solved? How you have demonstrated success? How does the prototype address the CS 410 project risk mitigation? Describe the functional goals and objectives.

4.3. Prototype Development Challenges

Describe the expected challenges to be encountered while completing the prototype – e.g., knowledge missing, capability missing, supporting technology issues.

5. Glossary

Alphabetical list of terms and abbreviations.

6. References

Listing of sources.

2 Glossary, References, & Figures

  1. Collaboratively prepare a Glossary for use in all labs. Post this on your team’s website.
  2. Collaboratively prepare a set of references for use in any and all labs. Post this on your team’s website
  3. If any figures and/or tables are developed or updated:
    1. Make them available to all group members.
    2. Post them to your Group site.

3 Lab Proper

A full description of Lab 1 is located in Requirements

  1. Begin to write this lab individually.
  2. You may not use the written work of any team member.
  3. Utilize the Grammar FAQ to post any questions regarding the grammar and formatting guidelines.

4 Requirements

Prepare a descriptive paper that communicates the characteristics of your CS 410 project. The paper must describe innovative aspects of your product and persuade the reader of the intrinsic value of your product.

You can not (and must not) assume that the reader has prior knowledge of your problem domain, other than what is available in the current media. Such media includes the Internet, the local news, newspapers, television boradcasts, and radio broadcasts.

Your paper must have a clear connection to the descriptive material prepared during CS 410 contain the technical characteristics of the project. Figures and Tables (with appropiate listings and captions) must be included.

Submission instructions are listed below. Review the Grammar and Formatting guidelines.
