1 Overview

Lab 1 is your Descriptive Paper. Functionally it is the sum total of your CS 410 Presentations (e.g., Feasibility and Design) in written form.

Revisit your CS 410 Presentations one more time. Double check that you (and your group) did not forget any content. Revisit

along with your

Remember… the Lab 1 Outline is collaborative (i.e., a group effort). Everyone must work from the same outline. If when writing Lab 1 your find something you need to add… let your team know!

2 Draft Criteria

As one might expect, I do not expect your Lab 1 Draft to be 100% complete. However, I expect every section (as identified in your outline) to be present. I expect everything to be a good faith effort.

As an example consider a Traffic Wizard Lab 1. Of course this one is the fourth version. However, we have spent far more time preparing this semester than in years past.

2.1 Margins

There exist a few issues. The first is in the Table of Contents on Page 2. The Headings do not match the rest of the content. All headings must be the same font face and font size!

The second issue lies with the Heading Margins. They are inconsistent. Take a look at the List of Tables heading. It has no margins. Compare it to the List of Figures and Table of Contents headings.

Margins will be the first item on the Draft checklist. This applies to headings, captions, figures, tables, and pages (i.e. page margins).

2.2 Title Page

Your Title Page must contain centered (both vertically and horizontally) the

  1. Lab number and name (e.g., Lab 1: Descriptive Paper)
  2. Your name (e.g., Thomas J. Kennedy)
  3. Course number (i.e., CS 411)
  4. Instructor name
  5. Submission date (i.e., the formal deadline)
  6. Version (e.g., Version 1)

These items must be updated for each submission–you will update the date and version number with each formal Lab Submission.

2.3 Table of Contents

Your Table of Contents Page must contain the:

  1. Table of Contents: section headings and page numbers
  2. Listing of Figures: figure numbers and page numbers
  3. Listing of Tables: table numbers and page numbers

2.4 Content Proper

Paper Content is almost impossible to capture succinctly (due to the differing projects and writing styles). The overall criteria (for the draft) will be based on:

  1. Good Faith Effort - is the content reasonably complete and well written?
  2. Completeness - does every section have meaningful content?

Grammar, style, and content will be evaluated rigorously for a small part of your draft. On average this will be the first one or two pages of content.
