Getting Around on the WebSite:

almost every page on this website contains a navigation bar (which you can see above).

• Home: will take you to the home page for the site It includes:
  • Syllabus: General information about the course
  • Schedule: List of deadlines, meeting times, test schedule
  • Assignments: a list of assignments
  • Project: Information about the term project (assigned about mid-term time)
  • Messages: a list of messages regarding the class
  • Class Roster: A list of fellow students with contact information
• Schedule: Lists study modules to be covered, tests and  assignment due dates.
  Note: Since this is a self-paced course, the dates provide a suggested pace that will allow you to finish the course in one semester.
• Personal Progress: should be used to track your individual progress. It includes
  • Shows Status of Assignments
  • Shows Grades

  NOTE: you will not be able to access your personal progress until you obtained a UNIX acount.

• Search: Brings up a list of all web pages that match keywords you type in
• Help: Includes FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).
• Glossary: list of terms that are used in this course.

Organization of Material on the Site:

This website is NOT an electronic textbook.
It assumes that you will read and refer to the textbook while taking this course.

• The material on the site
  • supplements the textbook with working examples and small programming experiments
  • presents a plan of study
  • provides a means of communicating class information
• The study plan gives a list of study modules. A study module is similar to a chapter in a textbook which includes a set of related topics, review questions and possible an assignment. Each study module has a quiz which is used to assign your grade and monitor progress.

  • Programming examples
    The source code for the example is available for download by clicking this icon
    Click this icon to find out more about how to download the source code.
    You are encouraged to download the examples, compile and run them and use them in your assignments.
  • Experiments: This are program written to perform an experiment. They illustrate our scientific method approach to understanding complex systems. The source code for these experiment is also available for download and you are encouraged to perform the experiments at home.

Communicating with the instructor:

There are several ways of communicating with the instructor and the teaching assistants.
You are expected to make regular contact with the instructor as outlined in the course contract.

• E-mail is the preferred means of communications. E-mail policy is to acknowledge all student e-mail within 24 hours during week days. Almost every page has an e-mail link to the instructor at the bottom.

• Internet: netmeeting will be available to support on-line synchronous communications with the instructor during office hours or by appointment.

Since some of this site is experimental, we appreciate your comments on things which you like and those you don't as well as suggestions for improvements.

Also we ask your patience with any bugs in this site. Even instructors and graduate students sometimes make mistakes!
