Welcome to the home page for CS771/871 for the Fall 2000 semester.

CS781/881 is a graduate level course in operating systems. It assumes that you have already taken an introductory operating systems course (perhaps at the undergraduate level) and are familiar with basic operating systems principles. This course will explore many of these same principles but from the point of view of a distributed system. I have chosen to focus on distributed operating systems because it is becoming increasingly true that no operating system is an island. Because of the emphasis on distributed systems, this course shares issues and concepts from related courses in distributed systems, distributed data bases, networks and communications among others. However, we will focus on the kernel common to distributed systems which permits the proper and efficient management of resources distributed across several CPUs.

In an effort to improve the dissemination of course material and to help manage the course dynamics, a WEBook is being developed. This WEBook is an evolving document subject to change at any time. Although information will be extensively cross linked, the syllabus will lay out a road map for the course. Also the latest changes will be featured in the What's New section which will updated weekly with the most recent information contained at the top. These pages are being created using MICROSOFT's Front Page beta release following a Project Web template. Please direct any ideas, suggestions or criticisms to [Dr. Wild]. The end of every page contains a convenient e-mail link for this purpose.

What's New

The following is a list of recent additions to our class. Every week we'll move the oldest items to the end or remove them. The most recent changes are listed first, and each item is linked to the page with the updated content.
